Citywide 4th of July Celebration Canceled for 2020
At the May 19 Common Council meeting, our elected leaders made the difficult decision to cancel the citywide Fourth of July celebration in 2020.
For many years, the Oak Creek community has celebrated the Fourth of July together with a festive parade, ice cream cups handed out by the mayor and other elected officials, kids’ games, live music, and a beautiful fireworks display at dusk. Unfortunately, the many obstacles to planning a 2020 event in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in the Common Council canceling this event scheduled for Saturday, July 4, 2020.
While discussing the recommendations of the City’s Celebrations Commission, and additional input from our public safety departments, the Mayor and Council acknowledged how difficult it would be for those involved in planning and carrying out this major city event in a safe manner this year. While disappointing to many, this decision was made in the public health interest of the Fourth of July celebration participants, volunteers, partners, and guests.
We thank you all for your understanding.
Join us for the annual 4th of July parade beginning at 9:00 a.m. near Edgewood Elementary School and ending at American Legion Post 434, where the celebration continues. Wrap up the day with fireworks at Lake Vista Park - at dusk!
Due to construction beginning in a new subdivision adjacent to East Middle School, we are no longer able to launch fireworks at our former longstanding location. After evaluating potential sites throughout Oak Creek, City leadership chose Lake Vista Park as the new location for our 4th of July Fireworks display.
Here are some steps we've taken to make the transition go as smoothly as possible:
Lake Vista Park:
Street parking per the Oak Creek Police Department will be limited to one side in many places. This is to help direct the traffic in a direction that minimizes congestion and for the safety of all. There will be “NO PARKING” signs placed in those areas, and we ask you to please follow directions to avoid any issues. Weather and site conditions permitting, we may have additional parking available at Lake Vista behind the Pavilion for up to 400 vehicles.
There will be additional parking available at Bender Park upper and lower area. Shuttle service to Lake Vista will not be available from these areas.
Two 33 passenger shuttle buses will begin shuttling to Lake Vista Park from the American Legion Post 434, 9327 S Shepard Ave, Oak Creek, (additional parking at East Middle School) beginning at 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. After the fireworks, the shuttle buses will resume transporting passengers from Lake Vista Park back to the American Legion Posts 434. The shuttle will pick up and drop off at the upper legion area.
