Public Health Nurses can perform urine pregnancy testing at least 7-10 days after a missed menstrual period. Urine pregnancy testing measures human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone produced right after a fertilized egg attaches to the wall of a woman's uterus. In a normal pregnancy, hCG can be detected in urine and serum as early as 7 to 10 days after. A first morning urine sample is preferred since it generally contains the highest concentration of hCG however urine samples collected at any time of the day may be used. Urine sample containers are available upon request.
