Selling or junking a motor vehicle

When you are selling or junking a motor vehicle, you should take the following steps:

  • Always take the license plates off of your vehicle before releasing it. If you have failed to do this you may need to cancel your license plate with the Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Always have proof that you sold the vehicle. Your proof should include the vehicle identification number and a description of the vehicle that you have sold, as well as the name, address, date of birth and telephone number of the person you sold the vehicle to. If at all possible have the person purchasing the vehicle sign a sale agreement that you have drafted.

There are often times that people receive parking tickets on a vehicle that they have sold or junked. When this occurs, each municipality handles the citations differently. In Oak Creek if you can provide proof of the sale or junking of vehicle, we can handle the matter without you having to appear in court. We will reissue the ticket to whomever you sold the vehicle to.
