A recent posting on the National Crime Prevention Council website warned of the emerging crime trend of Gas Station Theft.

Due to the unique setting, thieves are able to catch their victims off guard as they pump their gas or pay their tab inside the station. It is common for the victim to leave their car door unlocked with items like purses and wallets left in plain view. A thief is able to drive up next to the victim’s car, open an unlocked door, and grab any valuables within reach in as little as four seconds. Then, the thief quickly drives off. It all happens in a matter of seconds.

Thefts of this nature can easily be prevented if the appropriate precautions are taken. The National Crime Prevention Council and the Oak Creek Police Department recommend the following tips to prevent citizens from becoming victims of theft at area gas stations.

  • Pick stations that are well lit and have video surveillance cameras at the pump.
  • Keep your windows up – if you drive with them down, close them before you open your door to get out.
  • Always remove your keys and lock the doors while you are pumping gas.
  • Keep valuables out of plain view in your vehicle and lock the doors even if you are going inside for a moment - secure them under your seat or in the trunk.
  • If you have been shopping - store your purchased items in the trunk where they are out of sight.
  • Pay attention to your surroundings.
  • Don’t let your cell phone distract you.

SUV’s and minivans are targeted often for this type of theft since the view is often obstructed and entry on the passenger side can go unnoticed. Thieves are not just after money and credit cards anymore, they are targeting your personal information for identity theft. Remember that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!
