Oak Creek Police Warns Residents to be Aware of Fraudulent Tax ReturnsShare This +
IRS Fraudulent Tax Return and Green Dot Crime Alert
The Oak Creek Police Department is warning residents to be aware of the newest twist in fraudulent tax returns. Green Dot Visa Card accounts are being set up in victims’ names without the victim actively applying for the account.
If you or someone you know received a Green Dot Reloadable Prepaid Card via mail, stating an account has been opened in your name please contact the IRS immediately – 1-800-829-1040-or-the Federal Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) which will help taxpayers with problems concerning the IRS - 1-877-777-4778, TTY/TDD 1-800-829-4059; contact the Wisconsin Dept. of Revenue by calling one of these phone numbers and select Option “2” : 1-608-266-8100, 414-227-4907 or Toll Free 1-866-947-7363; and call Green Dot Bank to block transactions to the account.
Notifying Green Dot Bank – Instructions for Victims:
If the victim has the Green Dot card account information they should do the following:
- Call the number on the card – 1-866-795-7605. This is an automated line. There will be prompts to enter the card number, the expiration date and the victim’s last four of their social security number. (This is for verification purposes since Green Dot already has the information since a card was opened using the victim’s personal identifying information.) This number is used to activate the card, but also will lead to the prompts for more information. Hit the prompt for customer service, report the fraud, and block transactions to the account. Some of the accounts already have balances on them because the tax refund has been deposited. This will freeze the account and Green Dot will close it so the perpetrators cannot remove the money.
If the victim does not have the Green Dot card because they destroyed it, they should do the following:
- Call Green Dot Customer Service at 1-866-795-7597 – Talk to a representative. Report the card fraud. This person will also ask for the personal identifying information to check the status of the card. Remember that Green Dot Bank already has this information, and is using the information to verify your account. Green Dot Bank will be unable to close the account without this information.
Residents receiving the cards are at high risk of having a fraudulent tax return filed in their name. The account is used to accept the fraudulent tax refund; and the perpetrator pulls the money from the account electronically, possibly before the victim is aware that the account exists.
Please pass this information to others, so we can try to protect against this action and the fraudulent use of a victim’s identity.
