The City’s proposed 5th Avenue extension project cleared a major hurdle on February 25.  After an extended review period, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) signed the FONSI, which means it approved the project to proceed.  FONSI is an acronym for “Finding Of No Significant Impact”.  FHWA reviewed testimony from the 2014 public hearing, the environmental document (a collection of reports addressing potential traffic, wetland, archeological and social impacts) and the design alternatives, and found nothing to warrant standing in the way of the project or requiring major design changes.  The project is now free to move on to 60% design plans, right-of-way acquisition and railroad coordination, then construction.

The project is scheduled for construction in 2017.
