Around the Town with Mayor Steve: Oak Creek Resident Will Allen & Growing Power

Will Allen, an Oak Creek resident, and former professional basketball player, is the CEO and founder of Growing Power, a local farm and nationally-acclaimed community food program in the United States. Will is leading an effort to promote community-based and local sustainable food programs to make sure that every person has access to fresh, safe, affordable, and nutritious food, raised in their own neighborhoods and communities.

Growing Power has farms and greenhouses in Oak Creek, Milwaukee, Merton, and Chicago, Illinois, with satellite-training sites in Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Massachusetts, and Mississippi. Schoolchildren, community groups, and urban farmers have toured his facilities, and witnessed the environmentally-friendly food production and sustainable growing practices that are the cornerstones of the Growing Power mission.

Will has won numerous state and national awards including the 2008 John D. and Katherine T. McArthur Foundation Fellow, was picked as a member of the Clinton global initiative, and in 2010, named as one of Time Magazine's 100 World's most influential people.
