Around the Town with Mayor SteveShare This +
This week Lt. Brian Murphy and Officer Sam Lenda of the Oak Creek Police Department will be interviewed by CBS News reporter Elaine Quijano in Oak Creek to discuss their roles in the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin shooting on August 5th. The interview will take place at the Sikh Temple and the Oak Creek Police station, and will review their professional backgrounds, their training in respect to what happened, and a walk-thru at the Temple site of the events, as they saw them unfold on that day.
This story will be aired on the CBS Evening News on Monday, October 29th between 5:30 and 6:00pm. On Monday morning, a feature article on the two officers will appear in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.
Both officers responded to this dangerous situation at the highest level possible, putting their own safety at risk to reduce the chances of further loss of life, and bringing a quick end to these very violent events. Their actions were courageous and heroic. Their professionalism and dedication to our collective public safety should be commended, and we believe that by providing our officers the opportunity to reach out to the public, to tell their story, we can all benefit from a better understanding of the role of police officers in keeping the public safe, and reducing the risks for all of us.
We also wish to express our thanks to the Sikh community, and the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin, for their continued compassion and courage in the aftermath of these violent acts. The Sikh community has been very supportive of our police department and has forged an excellent working relationship with city officials in the wake of this tragedy. We will continue to reach out to them, and to all groups, to insure that the diversity of our city is celebrated and encouraged as a means to a better community.
