A few weeks ago I met local resident and business owner Carrie Bilicki at the Oak Creek Community Center and she told me about her candidacy for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Man and Woman of the Year fundraising campaign. In cities across the U.S. men and women compete to earn the title based on raising funds for blood cancer research. Carrie, a certified oncology nurse, has a goal of raising $75,000.00 by May 4, 2013.

She chose her goal in honor of her father Dale Churchill, and her mission over the past few months has been to host various fundraising events around the city, including live music concerts, bowling events, and the recent Comedy Night at the Oak Creek Community Center on Friday, April 12th. Many individuals and businesses around the area have donated their facilities, merchandise, or food for these fundraising events, and it truly is a demonstration of the power of one person to change lives.

Nursing is only part of Carrie’s activities, she is also a partner in the Cousin’s Subs franchise on Highway 100 and Drexel Avenues in Franklin, serves on many community boards, and is a very proud member of the Oak Creek Lions.

Carrie forwarded these facts on the impact of leukemia and lymphoma in our society.

  • Every four minutes someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer.
  • Every ten minutes someone dies.
  • Leukemia is the leading cause of cancer death of children and young adults.
  • In Wisconsin, in 2011, 1,090 people died from blood cancers.
