As Mayor, I had the opportunity last week to celebrate the 10 year anniversaries of two organizations in our city. Both serve very different roles, but each in their own way contributes to our quality of life here in Oak Creek. Trattoria Di Carlo (DiCarlo’s Restaurant) and Manor Pointe of Oak Creek recently celebrated their anniversaries with special events, highlighting the service they provide to our residents.

DiCarlo’s, located at 8649 S. Howell Avenue, has hosted many community events, as well as provided food for civic and educational fundraising events throughout our city. Carlo Pedone, the owner of DiCarlo’s, donated the food for a benefit on Saturday, February 23rd, in support of Haley Rae Cabreza, a young girl born four weeks premature, with significant medical challenges. With his help, the event raised almost $15,000.00, which will help pay for Haley’s medical expenses and special care. Contributions like this demonstrate DiCarlo’s commitment to the City of Oak Creek and to its residents. Congratulations to Carlo and all his employees for their generosity and community involvement!

Manor Pointe, located at 700 E. Stonegate Drive, is part of the Meadowmere Senior Living community, home to many of our city’s seniors and the recipient of a 5-Star Senior Living rating. I attended their 10th Anniversary event on Thursday, March 14th, along with city staff, as they celebrated with a tropical-themed party for their residents and volunteers featuring Caribbean music, appetizers, and tours of their building. I had the chance to talk with many of the residents during the afternoon, and all of them spoke highly about the comfort and security they receive at Manor Pointe, important considerations for our senior residents. Karin Nickel, Community liaison at Meadowmere, was a wonderful host, and along with her great staff, is the principal reason for the sense of community so prevalent at Manor Pointe. Great to meet everyone last week!

We continue to hear great feedback on the Mayors Fitness and Weight Loss Challenge which wrapped up at the end of February. I’m working on some flash fitness events to be held this summer, leading up this year’s Challenge, which will be held September 1st to January 2nd, 2014. Stay tuned to the city website and Facebook page for all the details.
