On November 10th, 2012 we kicked off our Mayor’s Fitness & Weight Loss Challenge with an event at Oak Creek High School. A little more than 3 months later we’ve lost almost 900 total pounds, by working out together, and pushing each other to make positive changes in our diet and fitness regimens, getting healthier as a community. Thanks to the hundreds of participants who got fit during the toughest time of year to do so, during the winter and holiday seasons, and for stepping up for your community. This past Saturday we awarded the winners at our finale event at Wheaton Hospital on S. 27th Street.

Our Men's winner from the Mayor's Fitness & Weight Loss Challenge event, Jeff Sageser, lost an incredible 46.4 pounds of weight during the 3 months, which was more than 16% of his total body weight. He worked out at Oak Creek Fitness on Ryan Road in Oak Creek, and is very active in the community, serving as a Board Member at the Oak Creek Community Center, and assisting the Oak Creek High School Marching Band fundraising group.

Our Women's winner from the Mayor's Fitness & Weight Loss Challenge event, Leslie McFarron, lost 42.3 pounds during the Challenge, an amazing 21.75% of her total body weight. She works out at Nova Gyms Fitness Center on S. 27th Street, and credits her trainers for her weight loss success. Her weight loss story was featured on Fox6 Milwaukee’s report on the Challenge, which can be viewed through this link.

The winning team “For Friends” lost a combined total of just under 100 pounds, which was almost 8% of their total body weight. Team members included Jeff and Marge Sageser, Tom and Ann Flick, Sally Galewski, and Sheryl Cerniglia. Great work all!

During the 3 months we held 18 events including Zumbathons, diet workshops, fitness demonstrations, and community walks, including a “Turkey Day Trek” attended by 160 Challenge participants, which also raised over 125 pounds of food for the local Salvation Army food pantry. All of these events involved the coordination and help of our partners in the Challenge, including Wheaton Hospital, local fitness clubs, the Oak Creek Community Center, and many other local groups. Leslie Flynn, from our city hall staff, was invaluable in designing our event flyers, and compiling the weight loss numbers throughout the Challenge, and I thank her for the commitment of many hours of personal time to this important community initiative.

We will continue to sponsor community flash fitness events throughout the Spring and Summer months, leading up to our 2nd Challenge, beginning in September, and running through January 2nd, 2014. Stay tuned to our Mayor’s Challenge Facebook page for information!

Thanks to all of you who participated, and for helping me reach my personal weight loss goal of 20 pounds. Looking forward to our next Challenge.
