On Tuesday, February 12th, I had the opportunity to visit our local FIRST MORE Robotics team #1714 at American Acrylics in South Milwaukee as they work on their robot for the Ultimate Ascent competition at the U.S. Cellular Arena on Friday and Saturday, March 22nd and 23rd. The team, made up of twenty-five students from various Southeastern Wisconsin schools (including eleven from the Oak Creek School District), participates in annual competitions that helps students discover the rewards of science, engineering, and technology careers.

This year’s competition features disc throwing and an eight foot pyramid climb at the end of a two minute and fifteen second match, played on a 27 X 54 foot field. The students have six weeks to design, build, and program their robots from scratch, which will weigh approximately 150 pounds at completion.

A local Oak Creek company, Nucor, built a full-size replica pyramid at their facility, so the students could use it for trials of their robot. Led by Oak Creek High School teacher Marc Rivest, who is the faculty advisor, along with a dedicated group of parent volunteers, the team is putting in many hours getting their robot ready for the March competition. It’s free, and open to the public, so stop down to the U.S. Cellular Arena to check out their work and cheer them on!

This Saturday, February 23rd, we’ll wrap up this year’s Mayor’s Fitness and Weight Loss Challenge at Wheaton Hospital (10101 S. 27th Street) with an awards ceremony honoring the winners, and announcing our community weight loss total. Random prizes will be given out to Challenge participants who attend the event, Sweet Music will be there to provide some music, and healthy refreshments will be served. Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Wisconsin will also be on-site to collect clothes that no longer fit, so please help out our friends at Goodwill with a donation of freshly laundered, gently-used clothing.

We’ve conducted more than a dozen Challenge events over the past three months, and I’m excited to talk about some of the success stories and people we’ve met along the way. Thanks for going on the journey with me...
