MINUTES OF THE MEETING  Thursday August l4, 2003

Meeting Called to Order at 6:38 p.m.

Introductions

  1. Introduction to Woodland Ordinance suggested objectives (Lane)
    1. Long term objective to grow canopy cover
    2. Protection of primary and secondary corridors—high quality natural areas, late successional woodlands, and large tracks of woodlands
    3. Specifications:  Individual trees and/or forest protections
    4. Smart Growth
  2. Review of Environmentally Sensitive Areas map
  3. Discussion of what areas are we protecting and who owns it
  4. Discussion of possible objectives for Woodlands Ordinance included:
    1. What is our role?
    2. Referendum possibilities
    3. Responsible development
    4. Compensation for landowners
    5. Concern for Landowners rights
    6. Resources possible—Present ordinances
    7. Who will enforce and how?
    8. Use of city publication Acorn to keep public informed
  5. Discussion of possible use of Land Trust—tree fund and matching grants
  6. Input and discussion of above topics resulted in the idea to focus on Woodland Preservation Ordinance first and work toward other goals for committee later
    1. Subdivision trees
    2. Historic trees
    3. Public Awareness
  7. Committee agreed to review materials provided
    1. Map of Environmentally Sensitive Areas
    2. City of Mequon Tree Protection and Preservation Guidelines
    3. MnSTAC Guide to Developing a Tree Preservation Ordinance
    4. Smart Growth Information
  8. Next meeting will be August 28, 2003 at 6:30 (members will be notified of location)
    1. Mission statement will be worked on at this meeting
    2. Lane will work on map to identify what is still in existence and who owns large acreages
    3. Other resources will be explored as provided by members
  9. Meeting adjourn 8:10 Motion by Grabowski ..seconded by Marhal
