City of Oak Creek

Common Council Report

Meeting Date: June 5, 2007

Item No.:

Recommendation:  To concur with the recommendation of the Traffic and Safety Commission and approve the request to install the street light in the median on S. 27th Street at the intersection of W. St. John’s Way.

Background:  The Traffic and Safety Commission discussed this issue at the January 10, 2007 meeting.  It was recommended at that time that the Engineering Department investigate the cost and location of the proposed street light.  The Engineering Department worked with Wisconsin Department of Transportation to obtain a permit to install the street light along the STH 241 (S. 27th Street) and WE Energies to obtain power for the street light.  The issue was brought back to the Traffic and Safety Commission to review the Engineering Department findings at the May 9 meeting.  The citizens opposed to the installation felt that there were no safety or traffic issues at this location and it was going to be a waste of taxpayer money.  The citizens in favor stated that they felt that it would provide necessary light for friends and family to be able to locate the entrance into the subdivision.

Fiscal Impact:  The cost of the installation of the street light is estimated at $3,000 and the funds are available in the street lighting maintenance fund.
