City of Oak Creek

Common Council Report

Meeting Date12-18-07

Item No.:

Recommendation:  That the Council awards the street tree pruning project (Project No. 07014) to Giese Tree & Landscaping in the amount of $30,680.

Background:  We are running behind in our scheduled large/mature tree unit pruning which should be on a five to six year pruning rotation.

Contractor pruning is a last resort due to the lasting damage that can occur from potential improper pruning.  A surprising number of tree services do not provide pruning up to basic industry standards.  Nor do extremely detailed specifications deter bidding by unqualified tree services and individuals.

Our specifications for this project are unique in that they require proof of arborist skills in tree assessment and demonstration of pruning skills.  Additionally, instructions for pruning individual tree species is described in clear detail.

Our selection is based on successful completion of qualifying pruning assessment, work history with the City of Oak Creek and other municipalities, competitive bid and, experience in projects of a similar magnitude.  Giese tree and Landscaping was the lowest, qualified bidder.
