City of Oak Creek

Common Council Report

Meeting Date: October 2, 2007

Item No.:

Recommendation:  To concur with the recommendation of the Traffic and Safety Commission and approve the installation of 4-way stop signs at the intersection of E. Fenway Drive and S. Sharon Drive.

Background:  The request was discussed at the Traffic and Safety Commission meeting on September 12, 2007.  There were approximately 20 residents present for this item.  The residents stated that approximately 27 children live along Fenway and that with a sidewalk on only one side, children tend to cross mid-block to get to the sidewalk.  They also stated that it is hard to watch their children at all times, and the City should provide additional measures to control speed such as placement of stop signs.  They also stated that there are two bus stops at Orchard View along with numerous cars going over curbs into yards at the corner at S. Stone Creek Drive.  Commission continued discussion with residents, but clearly stated that even with the introduction of stop signs, the residents are still responsible to educate the children that there will be vehicles that do not obey the new stop signs.  The motion passed with 6 members in favor and 2 against (Engineering and Streets) the motion.

Fiscal Impact:  If approved, there are sufficient funds available in the Street Department operating budget to accommodate this installation.
