City of Oak Creek

Common Council Report

Meeting Date: October 2, 2007

Item No.:

Recommendation:  To concur with the recommendation of the Traffic and Safety Commission and approve the installation of 4-way stop signs at the intersection of W. Potomac Drive and S. Delaware Drive.

Background:  The request was discussed at the Traffic and Safety Commission meeting on September 12, 2007.  There were approximately 5 residents present for the item.  The residents sited a number of concerns for the intersection that include the following: serves as bus stop for four separate pick-up times, perception of excessive speed, don’t feel safe walking, inattentive drivers, and it would make it easier to self police.  Engineering Department stated that the installation would probably only create a spot reduction in speed and the chances of vehicles running the stop sign would probably be around 25%.  The citizens didn’t believe the Engineering opinion and stated that if drivers are running the stop sign, they should be ticketed.  The motion passed with 6 members in favor and 2 against (Engineering and Mike Helgeson) the motion.

Fiscal Impact:  If approved, there are sufficient funds available in the Street Department operating budget to accommodate this installation.
