Recommendation:  That the Common Council approve the request of the Street Superintendent to hire a part time 1500 hour  Mechanic Helper and part time 1040 hour Clerical Assistant.

Background:  The Street Department has two (2) full time mechanics and a part time Mechanic Helper (1500 hours).   We also have a Fabricator/Welder who currently works on the reconstruction of truck boxes and other related items.  The Street Department is currently doing all the maintenance of Fire Department Vehicles.  This leaves very little time to complete the needed work on the Street Department Vehicles.  This part time Mechanic Helper, along with the other Mechanic Helper, would assist with these Street Department tasks.

The part-time Clerical Assistant would assist the Account Clerk II in various office tasks including answering phones, billing, filing and invoicing.  This part time Clerical Assistant would also cover for vacations.

Fiscal Impact:  The cost of the Mechanic Helper would be approximately $23,017.00, with benefits, and the cost for the Clerical Assistant would be $13,278.00.  Funds have been included in the 2007 Fire and Street Department budgets.
