City of Oak Creek

Common Council Report

Meeting Date: 01/16/07

Item No.:

Recommendation:    That the Common Council approve the appointments of election officials as listed on the attached pages, for the one-year period of Jan. 1, 2007 through Dec. 31, 2007.

Background:  In the past, pollworkers were appointed at the end of even-numbered years for a two-year period, in accordance with Wis. Statutes.  In 2006, the legislature modified a number of statutory elements relating to election officials, which included changing the appointment period to two years at the end of odd-numbered years.  Appointments made at the end of 2006, therefore, would have only a one-year tenure, as transition appointments.

Because of the change in the process, and also because of new party committeepersons becoming contacts, we delayed the usual year-end appointment process until now, to allow the party representatives additional time to coordinate appointments and submit the names of candidates.  Unfortunately, we still have not had direct response from either major party representative, and are in need of officials being named for the Spring Primary and General Elections.   For those reasons, we are submitting the names of all election official nominees as “Unaffiliated”.

Please see the attached pages for the names and addresses of the election official nominees.

Fiscal Impact:   Funds have been included in the General Government budget, Part-time Salaries Account, to cover the wages paid to the appropriate number of election officials for all regular elections.
