City of Oak Creek

Common Council Report

Meeting DateJuly 18, 2006

Item No.:

Recommendation:  That the Common Council approve the recommendation of the Street Supervisor to purchase salt from the North American Salt Company, who was the low bidder for the State salt contract for road salt for the winter season of 2006/2007at $31.46 per ton.

Background:  The Street Department participated in the bid process for road salt through the State contract.  There were nineteen (19) surrounding municipalities that took part in the bid in an attempt to secure the best price for the purchase of road salt.  The State opened bids in June and has recommended the North American Salt Company as the low qualified bidder.  The price includes delivery to the Street Department yard.

Fiscal Impact:  The total cost for the 5,000 tons of salt is $157,300.00 which will be budgeted for in the 2007 Street Department operating budget.  The cost of salt increased $1.22 per ton over last year’s State bid.  However, we have ordered 500 tons less which produced a $9,020.00 reduction over last’s years operating budget.
