Recommendation:  That the Common Council approves the request of the Library Board and the recommendation of the Personnel Committee to fill a 1,500 hour per year permanent part time Library Public Services Aide III position and a 1,040 hour per year permanent part time Reference Librarian Position in 2007.

Background:  Usage of the library has grown in proportion to the increases in city population over the past five years. Circulation of materials has increased 9.23% from 2001 to 2005 (and almost 5% from January to October 2005 to 2006). During the same five-year period, library staffing levels have remained static. It has become increasingly difficult to deal with these increased workloads and not exceed hour limits for current part time staff.

Addition of these two positions would help to alleviate the increased work load that staff currently deal with and allow us to continue to provide the timely and efficient service that our community has come to enjoy.

Fiscal Impact:  Costs for the Library Aide III position would be $19,654 per year and costs for the Reference Librarian position would be $24,776 per year. Funds have been included in the 2007 library budget.
