City of Oak Creek

Common Council Report

Meeting Date:  10/03/06

Item No.:

Recommendation:  That the Common Council adopt Resolution 10681-100306 communicating to the League of Wisconsin Municipalities the opinion of the Oak Creek Mayor and Common Council relative to access to quality and affordable healthcare of all Wisconsin families and individuals.

Background:  On October 11, 2006 the League of Wisconsin Municipalities will entertain a Resolution forwarded by Manitowoc Mayor Kevin Crawford and the Manitowoc Common Council that seeks passage of a State Bill by 2008 that assures access to quality and affordable healthcare coverage for all Wisconsin Individuals and families.

The cause is indisputably noble and worthy of sincere pursuit.  However, the question before the League membership would authorize the State Legislature to adopt a bill by 2008.  The issue of affordable quality healthcare is complex, expensive and replete with special and collective interests.  The issue demands a thorough study and public debate of all related issues, an understanding of the industry, associated costs on implementation, and eventual ramifications of state-wide accessibility to healthcare, before adoption of a bill can be considered.

Fiscal Impact:  There is no fiscal impact related to this Resolution.
