Recommendation: That the Common Council discuss salary increases for the Mayor and Common Council, as requested by Ald. Jonas.

Background: The last time a salary increase was approved for the Mayor and Council was in April 1995. Ald. Jonas has requested discussion on the topic of salaries and is recommending an across-the-board minimum increase of 10% and a maximum increase of 20%, plus an increase of $25 in car allowances. Some of his recommendations for an increase are based on the following:

Cost of living
Oak Creek-Franklin School Board voted an increase in their salaries
State legislators received an increase in their salaries
Other communities have increased their elected officials’ salaries
More and more time is spent on city government affairs. i.e., search for a City Administrator, Plan Commission and Personnel issues, CDA issues, etc.

The following shows existing salaries and potential percentage increases.

Elected officials cannot receive salary increases while in their current term, so any increases would be staggered, with an increase effective 4/18/06 for Mayor and Aldermanic Districts 2, 4, and 6; and effective 4/07 for Aldermanic Districts 1, 3 and 5.
