Meeting Date: 08/16/05

Item No.:         19

Discussion: Establishing a salary range for the City Administrator position

Background

The process to recruit candidates for the vacant City Administrator position has begun.  Since there is currently no salary range listed for the position, the establishment of a salary range to be presented as part of the recruitment is appropriate.

The salary ranges in place for 2005 for other management level positions are as follows:

            $50,942   -   $64,304

            $55,469   -   $67,922

            $58,866   -   $73,583

            $63,394   -   $80,501

            $67,922   -   $90,415

The salary for the City Administrator’s position effective April, 2003 was $90,769.

The salary for the City Administrator’s position effective July,  2004 was $79,950.

Mr. Ed Henschel of Virchow Krause & Co, the firm selected to conduct the recruitment process, has provided a copy of the WCMA Manager/Administrator/Assistant Salary Survey from October, 2004 (since the survey for 2005 is not finalized) for the Council to use as a starting point for discussion.  By referring to communities of comparable size, population, geographic area and/or benefit structure, the Council could determine the appropriate range for the position in Oak Creek.

The first advertisement for the City Administrator position, in the Municipality magazine, was sent without any reference to salary, due to the deadline for publication.  Salary information should be included in other advertisement venues that will be appearing soon, to attract the most suitable candidates.

.

Fiscal Impact:

The 2005 budget includes funding for the year for the Administrator position for salary plus benefits, and includes funding for recruitment efforts.
