City of Oak Creek

Common Council Report

Meeting Date:  2/14/05

Item No.:         2

RecommendationThat the Common Council accept the transfer of funds from the Oak Creek Veteran’s Memorial Committee in the amount of $19,655.44.

BackgroundConstruction of the Veterans’ Memorial is now complete.  The committee has completed an audit of their books and is requesting the City of Oak Creek to accept the remaining funds from the memorial construction, in the amount of $4,617.44, to be used for ongoing care and maintenance of the memorial.

An additional amount of $15,038.00 will also be transferred.  This money is for the memorial brick project and will be used to pay bills associated with the engraving and installation of the bricks.  The memorial committee has established multi-year contracts with the monument company and the firm doing the brick installation.  This will guarantee the pricing for those parts of the project.  At the conclusion of the brick project, any remaining funds will be moved in to the memorial maintenance account.

Accounting will set up a donation account which will be used to pay the ongoing costs of the memorial.  The account will also accept public donations for the upkeep of the memorial.    The Fire Department has been assigned to be the stewards of this account; however, Mr. Gene Gosline has graciously agreed to assist the Fire Department with the brick project.  Other City Staff, including City Administrator Dr. Blumenfield and City Clerk Beverly Buretta have agreed to assist with the project.

Fiscal ImpactThe funds being transferred will be used for ongoing costs for the memorial.  If the account becomes depleted over time, the City would have to determine an alternate funding source.
