Recommendation:  That the Common Council approve the recommendation of the Street Superintendent to purchase salt from North American Salt Company, who was the low bidder for the State salt contract for road salt for the winter season of 2004/2005, at $28.75 per ton.

Background:  The Street Department participated in the bid process for road salt through the State contract.  There were eight (8) surrounding counties that took part in the bid to attempt to secure the best price for the purchase of road salt.  The State opened bids in May and has recommended North American Salt Company as the low qualified bidder.  The price includes delivery to the Street Department yard.

Fiscal Impact:  The total cost for the 5,000 tons of salt is $143,750.00 which will be budgeted for in the 2005 operating budget.  The cost of salt increased $1.26 per ton over last year’s State bid.
