City of Oak Creek
Common Council Report
Meeting Date: May 4, 2004
Item No.: 14
Recommendation: That the Common Council award the contract for the structural repairs to Fire Station #1 to Wm. Sackerson Construction Company in the amount of $119,564.
Background: Fire Station #1 was built in 1959. In recent years the steel lintels above the doors and windows have begun to rust heavily. The expansion caused by the rust has forced the brick above the lintels to lift, creating cracks in the mortar joints. This has caused an acceleration of the corrosion. We have attempted for the past few years to have a contractor do repairs. Because of the building boom we could not find a contractor who was willing to tackle a project of this relatively small size. In 2002 Angus Young was hired to prepare documents and oversee the bidding of the work. When the project was placed out to bid only one firm returned a bid. The Council declined to move ahead with only one bidder.
The Fire Department prepared bid specifications and advertised for bids again this year. We received bids from the contractors listed below. Wm. Sackerson Construction Company was the low bidder.

Fiscal Impact: Funds for these repairs will come from the Fire Department’s CIP Account Nos. 01019 and 03031. It must be noted that when the structure is opened up for repairs additional damage may be found that will create additional costs. There is contingency built into the project budget to deal with additional damage.
