City of Oak Creek
Common Council Report
Meeting Date: March 2, 2004
Item No.: 12
Recommendation: That the Common Council receive the summary report of the Oak Creek Community Health Survey, Fall 2003 as commissioned by Aurora Health Care and prepared by JKV Research, LLC.
Background: Aurora Health Care received a grant in 2003 to conduct community surveys. They offered this service to each health department in their service area. The health departments had input into the formulation of the questions. State law mandates that health departments conduct a community needs assessment every five years. This survey meets that requirement.
All questions were the same for every survey with the exception of the last two questions that could be tailored to an individual community. Oak Creek specific questions included the level of awareness and experience with the health department and reasons that might prevent some people from getting physical exercise.
The survey results were not surprising. The Health Department staff is planning the prevention grant activity to address the physical activity/nutrition findings of the report. As of the interviews last year (spring), only 5% of those interviewed did not know Oak Creek had a health department. This is much less than the responses obtained in the past. Staff has really done a great job of promoting our department.
Fiscal Impact: There was no cost to receive the survey results.
