City of Oak Creek

Common Council Report

Meeting Date: 02/16/04

Item No.:         8

Recommendation:  That the Common Council approve the Police Department’s purchase of two (2) Mobil Data Computer (MDC) systems for a total cost of $12,000.

Background: The MDC’s allow officers to query Wisconsin DOT and Crime Information Bureau databases directly from their squads. They are also interfaced with the Police Department’s CAD system, allowing officers to view and send information directly into the CAD database. The MDC’s also facilitate communication between officers and dispatchers as well as with other agencies.

The need for two (2) additional MDC systems was based on changes in the police department’s vehicle fleet. One MDC system is allocated for the additional marked squad that has been approved by the Common Council. The second MDC system is earmarked for squad #28, which is an existing unmarked patrol vehicle that is used extensively for patrol and traffic enforcement.

Fiscal Impact:  The total fiscal impact is $12,000. Monies have been allocated in the 2004 C.E.P. funding project #04010 to cover this expenditure.
