COUNCIL PROCLAMATION NO. 04-4
PROCLAMATION IN SUPPORT OF THE
MILWAUKEE – USS DES MOINES NAVAL SHIP PROJECT
WHEREAS, the USS Des Moines (CA-134) is the last of the Navy’s World War II class heavy gun cruisers, and presently in storage at the Naval Shipyard in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, the mission of the local organization known as the Milwaukee – USS Des Moines Historic Naval Ship project “All About Freedom” is to permanently berth the USS Des Moines on the Lake Michigan shoreline at Veterans Park; and
WHEREAS, it is the intention of the project organizers that the USS Des Moines become a veterans’ memorial as the largest historic Naval ship on the Great Lakes, to educate young Americans, to attract tourism, and to become a splendid memorial for all branches of the armed forces.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Mayor and Common Council of the City of Oak Creek do hereby encourage the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors to consider a favorable vote on this project while recognizing the magnitude of this project and the current fiscal restraints of Milwaukee County, area communities, and the State of Wisconsin.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk is hereby directed to submit a suitable copy of this proclamation to the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors and the organizers of the Milwaukee – USS Des Moines Ship Project.
