City of Oak Creek
Common Council Report
Meeting Date: 06/03/03
Item No.: 10
Recommendation: That the Common Council adopt Ordinance No. 2252, an Ordinance amending Section 5 of Ordinance No. 2192 to add the position of part-time Emergency Services Dispatcher with a salary range of $14.364 - $17.269 per hour.
Background: A medical leave request has recently been submitted by one of the Police Department’s third shift dispatchers for a 6-8 week period commencing June 4, 2003. This leaves the entire dispatcher unit short-staffed as two other dispatchers are currently on extended leaves (one child rearing leave and one military leave). The earliest expected return of one of the dispatchers is August; the second is unknown at this time. The absence of three dispatchers severely hinders dispatching operations. It is imperative that the Department address the temporary shortage. A past dispatcher, Kelly Dorfner, is currently employed by the Department as a part-time clerk/secretary. She is willing to fill in for the 6-8 week period, on a part-time basis. Her past dispatching experience allows the Department to fill the shortage immediately and without extensive training.
The current Salary Ordinance does not include the position of part-time Emergency Services Dispatcher. We are, therefore, respectively requesting that the Ordinance be amended to include the position.
Fiscal Impact: There will be no fiscal impact as all three full-time dispatchers on leave are not receiving any wages during their absence.
