City of Oak Creek

Common Council Report

Meeting DateDecember 2, 2003

Item No.:10

Recommendation:  That the Council approve the recruitment of a fulltime GIS Technician to replace the existing ¾ time GIS technician and continue the employment of the existing ¾ time position at a hourly wage of $10.50 per hour (effective January 1, 2004) until the new fulltime position is filled.

Background:  The Common Council in the 2004 City budget approved the hiring of a full time GIS Technician to replace the existing ¾ time technician.  The change from a part time to a fulltime position is part of the Community Development and IT/GIS personnel realignment as approved in the budget.  By keeping the part time position GIS position filled until a fulltime person is hired the map updates, CSM’s, buildings, zoning etc. can continue to be placed in the GIS system in a timely manner.  Also, the cost of temporarily maintaining the part time individual is less than a fulltime person.  The new job description is attached as well as the proposed costs for the position.

In accordance with the October 7th resolution approving a review and authorization process on hiring and promotions for the City, a request is being made to approve the start of this recruitment process.

Fiscal Impact:  The revised position is expected to cost the city approximately $38,000.  Funding for this position was approved in the 2004 budget.

Respectfully submitted,
