Recommendation:  Discussion and potential action relating to recruitment efforts to fill the City Administrator position.

Background:  At a special meeting on 11/13/03, the Common Council approved the use of a consulting firm to recruit applicants for the City Administrator position.  Staff was directed to obtain information on potential consulting firms and their cost.

We have obtained the names of several personnel consulting firms through the Internet, but have delayed contacting any of them until receiving further direction from the Council.  The steps we find to be needed are these:

• Have the Council identify a scope of services to be performed by the consulting firm, along with a proposed timetable for completion of each step of the process; firms could not estimate charges without knowing what services are to be provided.

• Determine whether the Council or an ad hoc committee will handle selection of a consultant.  If it is to be the ad hoc committee, the members should be named as soon as possible and their operating parameters determined.

Fiscal Impact:  Unknown at this time.
