City of Oak Creek

Common Council Report

Meeting Date:           10/21/03

Item No.:         6

RECOMMENDATION:         That the Common Council adopt Resolution No. 10297-102103, designating official holidays for 2004.

BACKGROUND: Near the end of each year, the Common Council declares the 10 official holidays for the City for the upcoming year.

In 2004, Christmas Day and New Years Day both fall on a Saturday.  Contract language dictates that in that case, the preceding workday shall be observed as the holiday.  If the holiday were to fall on a Sunday, then the next scheduled workday shall be observed as the holiday.  Christmas Eve Day and New Years Eve Day, also holidays, fall on a Friday (the preceding workday).  Because those two Fridays are already holidays, then the day preceding that, Thursday, December 23 and Thursday, December 30, then become the observed holiday for Christmas Day and New Years Day.

It should be noted that in order to retain 10 holidays for the year 2005, New Years Day 2005, which would be observed on December 30, 2004, is designated the first holiday date for the year 2005.

FISCAL IMPACT:  None.
