Memorandum - Wet Ground Maintenance

To: Individuals/Groups/Organizations
From: Douglas A. Schachtner, Director of Parks & Recreation
Re: Policies/Procedures City Ball Diamonds - Wet Ground Maintenance

Water removal, light raking of wet areas, sunshine, a breeze, and time are the ingredients necessary for getting a wet ball diamond's infield area into playing shape. Listed below are various do's and don'ts to be followed when individuals/groups/organizations are attempting to prepare a wet ball diamond infield area for scheduled practices/games:

  1. When removing water from infield dirt areas, be sure to just take off water--not infield dirt. Throw water into grass areas.
  2. Do not broom water/infield dirt onto grass areas.
  3. Small amounts of infield mix from storage pile (if available) can be used to fill in low areas on the diamond infield.
  4. Infield dirt is NOT to be removed from infield areas--under any circumstances.
  5. Home plates, bases and/or pitchers plates are not to be relocated to grass areas due to wet infields.
  6. Bases are to be carefully placed on anchors. Clean out small area around anchor before placing base on anchor. Do not force base onto anchor.
  7. If/when marking ballfields, a non-caustic marking powder must be used. Only infield dirt areas may be marked. Do not mark outfield grass foul lines unless permission is received from the Director of Parks and Recreation.
  8. Permission to drag diamond infields and the type of drag used for dragging the infield must be received/approved by the Director of Parks and Recreation prior to doing so.
  9. At no time are vehicles to go on any ballfield areas, except for a small jeep-type vehicle for dragging the ball diamond infield area.
  10. When dragging a ball diamond infield, the drag is to be kept at least 1' (foot) away from any grass area. This prevents infield dirt build-up (ridge).
  11. Ball diamond infields are not to be dragged when wet.
  12. Use of drying agents such as "diamond dry" must be approved by the Director of Parks and Recreation prior to their use.

Individuals/groups/organizations removing wet infield dirt from ball diamond infields, spreading/throwing wet infield dirt onto grass areas, forcefully jamming bases onto base anchors, and/or causing other maintenance problems pertinent to the ballfield/facility will be invoiced for labor and supplies/materials/equipment used in diamond restoration.
