What would you do if you couldn’t get out of the house for three days? What would you do if you were told to evacuate? The Oak Creek Health Department initiated the “Twelve Months of Preparedness Campaign” in January. This program guides individuals and families to prepare for the unexpected: make a plan; build a kit; and be informed. Knowing what to do is your best protection and your responsibility.
Each month the Health Department will post a new topic and a “Featured Item of the Month”. For example, the January “Featured Item” was a duffle bag, gym bag, or plastic container to build a kit. Consider assembling two kits: one lightweight “Go-Kit” if you had to evacuate quickly, and one “Stay-Kit” if confined to your home for a few days. Some local stores are participating in this campaign by posting a lime green sign near the “Featured Item” in the aisle with the item(s) or at the store counter. Look for the signs and review our Monthly Newsletter for items to build your kits and additional preparedness information. Oak Creek residents may stop at the Health Department to:
- Sign a pledge card to make 2010 your year to be ready,
- Pick up a free zip lock envelope to hold your “Family Communications Plan” and other important documents, and
- View the “Twelve Months of Preparedness” Display Board.
A drawing for emergency related prizes such as a “Go-Kit” duffle bag, crank flashlight or a crank radio will be held in December for those completing the pledge cards.
