Bed Bugs Becoming a More Prevalent Concern

Bed bugs have become more common throughout the United States in recent years. Widespread use of DDT during the 40's and 50's combined with limited world wide travel are believed to be reasons why the problem had been somewhat controlled.

These bugs are being increasingly encountered in apartments, hotel/motels, dormitories, shelters and common transportation facilities. Significant increased international travel and immigration are believed to have greatly contributed to resurgence of bed bugs. Infestations have been found in some of New York City's most expensive hotels.

Some preventative measures to keep bed bugs from entering your home are as follows:

• Regular housing cleaning including vacuuming your mattress can help prevent an infestation. Don't allow discarded items and clutter to accumulate in order to reduce the number of potential harborage areas.
• If possible refrain from buying used furniture or clothes. Use caution when bringing home used furniture, box springs, and mattresses from curb side.

When traveling the following preventative measures are recommended:

• Inspect your motel room for signs of tick like insects or dark blood spots. Look at cracks and crevices in the mattress, and if possible both sides of the box spring. Request a different room if you find any evidence.
• Protect belongings by keeping clothes and other personal items in your luggage. Keep your luggage in a closed trash type bag and store it off the floor on a shelf or rack.
• If possible, move the bed away from the wall, tuck in all sheets and keep blankets from touching the floor.
• When returning home, place your luggage in an isolated area, preferably the garage, and check it for insects. Wash all of your clothes in hot water and place in the dryer at hot setting for 20 minutes.
